Weheraeliya Sri Jinendraramaya

Sri Jinendrarama Buddhist Vihara was built at the foot of Weheragala, the largest rock in the Weheraeliya village which is situated in the ancient monarchy Pulathisi Pura currently known as Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka. This sacred temple is surrounded by rich flora and fauna and picturesque paddy fields flourished with irrigation from the historic Minneriya tank.

The great sanctity attached to the Sr Jinendraramaya is inherited by Weheragala rock, ancestral to ancient Raja Rata kingdom which is the home for sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree.

Venerable Wellagiriye Sumanajothi Thero came to Weheraeliya village in 1952 to spread the grace of triple gem, Buddha, Dhamma and Sangha among the people in the Kaudulla, Weheraeliya, Pinpara Yatiyalpathana and surrounded areas. With the help of Buddhist people in these villages, Venerable Sumanajothi Thero founded the Sri Jinendrarama Viharaya, the first Buddhist temple in the area in a small coconut thatched cottage.

Also, it continuously works with other Buddhist temples and organizations in neighboring villages in order to fulfill religious and social needs of the people.
